Statement 1:    The idea of officers being a public servant can be traced back to Sir Robert Peel’s nine policing principles. Sir Robert Peel makes it clear; policing cannot survive without the public. Peel’s principles emphasize the importance of officer’s relation with the public and that are officers are not separate from the public (Law Enforcement Action Partnership, n.d.). .

Statement 2:  The role of the police officer is to both serve the public and aid in the minimization of criminal activities. Malmin (2012) notes that the police continuously expose themselves to dangerous situations while managing to show “compassion, kindness and courtesy.” However, the necessary respect for citizens associated with the role also comes with the capacity to take the life of another individual in stressful conditions in a legally acceptable manner.
